Genetic diversity is a key component of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, yet many countries are unsure how to monitor and report on it. The good news is that assessing genetic diversity does not always require DNA data. Existing information on population size, distribution, abundance, and species monitoring can often provide the basis for reporting on Headline Indicator A.4 and related indicators. This policy brief explains the genetic diversity indicators adopted under the global biodiversity framework, outlines available data sources, and presents practical examples to help countries integrate genetic diversity into national monitoring and reporting systems.

Countries have updated their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and submitted their 7th National Reports, providing new insights into how genetic diversity is being integrated into biodiversity policy and implementation. Our policy brief highlights progress in setting national targets, reporting on the Genetic Diversity Indicator A.4, and addressing challenges related to data availability. The findings show that genetic diversity is increasingly recognized as a national priority, although further efforts are needed to strengthen monitoring and reporting.
